My youngest son is a junior in high school and he has his sites set on attending a specific university. In order for him to gain acceptance, he must perform at a certain level NOW! The other day at the dinner table we were talking about his homework and its status regarding completion. He indicated he was a little behind but would do his best to catch up AFTER he went out with his friends. I found a fathering moment here. I asked my son when we is driving his car, who is in charge of the decisions and the directions in where you go? He said obviously that he was. Very good. I next asked him if he were riding on a bus, who is in charge of getting you to your destination. Again the obvious answer; the bus driver. I asked him then if he is riding on the bus how much power does he have over the decisions and directions of the bus. He stated “none, all you can do is hope that you are on the right bus”. Correct again. While you have turned the control over to someone else, you can still influence your destination if you plan ahead.
The point I was making is that right NOW he controls his actions and his performance. He can choose to apply himself now for rewards LATER. He can choose which bus to ride.
As you can see what you do NOW impacts where you are going and where you eventually will be. It is critical that we take advantage of every opportunity NOW to reap the rewards LATER. The problem many of us have is that we get caught up in day to day activities and while we know what we should be doing for future business development, we are living in the present. My challenge to you is to take time now to do what will be of benefit to you and your company to insure your long term success. Remember you are in control NOW and what you do will impact and determine future results .Oh by the way, regarding my dinner conversation with my son, he decided it best if he caught up on his homework. Attaboy!
